Update 2020-09-26: DO NOT BUY.

This product is most probably not compatible with the current version of Beaker Browser. Keeping it published for archival reasons only. Note: No customers are affected by not updating it as it it made no sales anyway.

A social network for sharing anonymized salaries.

Basically, a Beaker-Browser website where you can:

  • Post anonymized salaries known to you, e.g., of people from your network, after taking their permission.
  • Specify other users you trust to be honest and write true salaries.

What you're buying

How to use - the easy way

How to use - the official way

Officially, you're buying only the files you'll download from Gumroad, and I have no obligation regarding Transparent Salaries's website or the source code on GitHub. So, to use the files you're buying directly:

  • Buy a copy from this page. You'll get a zip file. Decompress it.
  • The contents of the zip is the source code. You'll find the website's contents in dist/transparent-salaries/
  • Following this tutorial, import the website's contents. From Beaker: Menu -> Create New -> From Folder and then choose dist/transparent-salaries/.

Disclaimers and FAQ

The rest of the page is disclaimers or reasons why you may not want to buy this, and frequently-asked questions.

A statement: Although this looks like a Terms of Service, it isn't. There're no Terms of Service; this is a product. Other than the no-warranty clause, there's no special product terms, just the default ones by law if you're buying a copy of a software -- why shouldn't they be good enough?

Free Trial:

  • If you don't know, you can try the website for free by opening Transparent Salaries in Beaker. You can also preview the source code on GitHub.
  • Kindly, note that Gumroad's files may be different than the ones in the link because, for example, the website has received an update. Officially, you're buying the ones on Gumroad, so if the files are different, technically I'm not providing a free trial in that case.
  • However, since, as more detailed in Upgrades below, till there's an upgrade policy, all upgrades are available to all people who've bought Transparent Salaries, you can still go and try the upgraded version for free and you can actually continue using the upgraded version after you buy this older version.

Beaker Browser:

  • Beaker Browser is an experimental browser and still not widely used; its future is totally unknown.
  • It might not be very stable. It remained unusable for me for several months due to connectivity problems. It is now, though. However, it happened once that the Internet was unstable and I had to restart Beaker to get it to work normally again even though the Internet had returned normal. See here for another example of possible unstability problem.
  • I still face connectivity problems. For example, I can't share an archive directly from my machine to a friend's machine, I had to use Hashbase.
  • IMPORTANT: see Privacy and Anonymity below. Due to Beaker Browser's current nature, your privacy might get breached.

Transparent Salaries:

  • By sharing (anonymized) salaries of underpaid people in a certain company, is it possible that this would make it harder for them to negotiate for higher salaries in other companies?
  • The code is not bullet-proof. There're TODOs left hanging in the code. Sometimes, when I find a theoretical bug very hard to happen, I just ignore it.
  • In the future, as extra DRM (if it can be called so), I may add tying a license to a profile for social shaming of who didn't buy.

Privacy and Anonymity:

  • Only those who know your profile link can see your posted salaries, trustees, and profile name. However, it's probably difficult to keep it private since, if a friend adds your profile link to their trustees' list, anyone who knows your friend's profile link can know your profile link as well. Try Transparent Salaries in Beaker to understand trustees feature.
  • Even if you delete a post or a trustee or change your profile name, the old data is still there. This is a current limitation (and possible a feature) of using Beaker Browser and the dat:// protocol.
  • IMPORTANT: A current limitation of Beaker Browser and the dat:// protocol is that when you create or view a profile your IP address (an equivalent of a phone number for the Internet) is exposed. So, theoretically, one could, from seeing that your IP is sharing your profile and reading other profiles, could link this IP to your profile and thus know what profiles you're visiting. That said, it shouldn't be easy to do, and there's no feature in Beaker Browser to help with doing that, but it's certainly possible. There's supposed to be work on enhancing that aspect in Beaker Browser but I don't know when or what the result will be.

Upgrades:

  • Officially, you're only buying a copy of the files on Gumroad. There's no upgrade policy yet, but till I make an upgrade policy, all upgrades are available to all people who've paid for Transparent Salaries without extra cost.
  • You have the right not to upgrade (a right you don't have on most websites) and keep using an old version. However, this may be practically hard because, since this a semi-social-network, you need to convince the people you care about not to upgrade as well. I don't promise upgrades will backward-compatible.
  • I don't guarantee there'll be any updates to Transparent Salaries. Seriously. I doubt if enough people will buy to justify working on it.

Refund:

  • If you don't know, you can actually try the website for free till you're confident you want to buy it. Check Free Trial above.
  • Since you can try the website for free, officially, I'm not providing refunds.
  • However, if, for whatever reason, you feel you deserve a refund, don't hesitate to contact me, preferably within 30 days of your purchase. See Gumroad's How do I get a refund?
  • In all cases, please, please don't cancel the payment through your payment provider as this greatly hurts us! Talk to us or Gumroad first, please.

License:

  • Although the code is provided and you're buying a copy of it, according to default laws, as far as I know, there're some things you can't do with it.
  • In the LICENSE file, I'm allowing you to do some of what could possibly be exclusive rights. See LICENSE file for more details.
  • You can preview it here (Again, like in Free Trial above, if this differs from the file in Gumroad, I'm technically not providing a preview).
